The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV is reinforcing its unusual position in the Canadian electric-vehicle market this summer. Chevrolet advertises up to 513 kilometres of range for the front-wheel-drive version while keeping the LT’s starting price at $49,598. In Quebec, the vehicle may also benefit from federal and provincial incentives in 2026, provided the buyer and vehicle meet the respective program requirements.

A new road test published by Écolo Auto on August 11 highlights many of the strengths of the front-wheel-drive LT: ride comfort, handling, interior space and range all received praise. The publication nevertheless identified relatively slow DC fast charging, some less-polished behaviour from the electronic driving aids and rear-seat comfort as areas where the Equinox EV could improve.

What you need to know

The Equinox EV’s biggest strength is not one spectacular feature in isolation. Its appeal comes from a combination of attributes: a practical family-SUV format, more than 500 km of advertised range, substantial standard technology and a starting price low enough to preserve access to several government incentive programs.

That positioning helps explain why the Equinox EV quickly found an audience in Quebec.

Its overall picture, however, deserves nuance. Fast charging is not among the quickest in the segment, while cold Canadian winters can significantly reduce the range available in real-world driving.

What just happened

The Écolo Auto road test published on August 11, 2026 focused on the front-wheel-drive LT, the entry point to the Equinox EV range.

According to Chevrolet Canada’s current specifications, that version produces 220 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque.

Journalist Anthony Lemonde described the SUV as particularly well balanced in everyday driving. Its suspension absorbs broken pavement effectively, while the steering and overall road manners keep the vehicle composed and reassuring despite the substantial weight inherent to its electric powertrain and battery.

The test also highlighted the 17.7-inch central touchscreen, which Chevrolet includes on the LT. The manufacturer also advertises more than 20 standard safety and driver-assistance features on the Equinox EV.

Why the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV matters

The broader Canadian market gives the road test more significance.

On July 28, 2026, GM Canada said it remained the country’s top EV seller during the first half of the year, with more than one in five registered electric vehicles coming from one of its brands.

GM also reported that its EV sales had increased 33.4% year over year during the period and identified the Equinox EV as one of Canada’s 10 best-selling electric models.

The Equinox EV therefore occupies a strategically important role in General Motors’ electric lineup. It competes in the highly sought-after compact and midsize SUV space while remaining substantially less expensive than many premium electric vehicles.

Price and incentives: one of its biggest advantages

Chevrolet Canada currently lists the 2026 Equinox EV LT from $49,598, while the RS starts at $54,598.

Final pricing can vary depending on destination charges, location, options and promotions.

Chevrolet was also advertising several promotional credits on certain configurations in August 2026. Some offers were scheduled to run until August 31, 2026, meaning buyers should not assume those discounts are permanent or apply equally to every vehicle.

Up to $5,000 from the federal government

Since February 16, 2026, the federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program has offered up to $5,000 toward the purchase of an eligible fully electric vehicle.

For vehicles built in countries that have a free-trade agreement with Canada, the final transaction value generally has to be $50,000 or less to qualify under the applicable criteria.

As of August 14, 2026, the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV LT and LT AWD appear on the federal list of vehicles eligible for the maximum $5,000 incentive for a purchase or 48-month lease. Lower amounts apply to shorter leases.

That distinction matters: buyers should not assume every 2026 Equinox EV configuration automatically qualifies for the full federal amount.

Another $2,000 available in Quebec in 2026

Quebec continues to offer up to $2,000 toward the purchase of an eligible new electric vehicle registered in 2026.

The 2026 Equinox EV LT FWD, LT AWD, RS FWD and RS AWD are all listed under the provincial Roulez vert program.

For an LT that also complies with the federal program requirements, combined public incentives can therefore theoretically reach $7,000 on a 2026 purchase.

The federal and provincial rules remain separate, however, and buyers should verify the exact transaction price and eligibility with the dealer before signing a contract.

There is also a clear deadline for Quebec buyers: the provincial government says the Roulez vert program will end on December 31, 2026, with no new-vehicle purchase incentive under that program planned for 2027.

513 km of range: a genuine advantage, with a winter caveat

Chevrolet advertises up to 513 km of range on a full charge for the front-wheel-drive Equinox EV.

That figure makes the vehicle one of the more attractive long-range propositions in its price category.

During Écolo Auto’s summer road test, the vehicle’s trip computer reportedly displayed approximately 530 km after a full charge.

That number should not be treated as a new official range rating, however. It reflects one vehicle under specific driving and weather conditions.

Winter provides a very different picture.

During its winter EV evaluation, CAA-Quebec measured a 34% range reduction relative to the official rating for the Equinox EV in cold conditions.

That difference is particularly important for Quebec drivers who regularly make long trips during the winter.

Fast charging: the main compromise

The Equinox EV’s other notable limitation is its peak DC fast-charging rate.

GM lists a maximum of 150 kW.

In Écolo Auto’s road test, charging from roughly 10% to 80% was estimated to require around 40 minutes under favourable conditions.

That is acceptable for occasional highway travel, but it does not make the Equinox EV a charging leader.

Some competing electric vehicles built on 800-volt architectures can significantly reduce charging stops on long-distance journeys.

For an owner who primarily charges at home and uses DC fast chargers only a few times per year, however, the difference may matter far less.

Comfort, equipment and driving behaviour

The Equinox EV LT does not feel like a stripped-down model designed merely to advertise a low entry price.

Chevrolet includes its large 17.7-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and numerous driver-assistance features from the LT trim.

Écolo Auto also praised the suspension tuning and the generally composed road manners.

The publication did, however, criticize occasional abrupt interventions from the traction-control and ABS systems over certain road irregularities.

That should be treated as an observation from the individual road test rather than evidence of a formally recognized defect affecting every Equinox EV.

Another distinctive choice is GM’s decision not to include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in its newer electric vehicles.

The built-in Google-based infotainment system provides navigation and applications, but drivers accustomed to directly mirroring their smartphones will need to change their habits.

Genuine popularity, but the sales figures need context

The Equinox EV is unquestionably popular in Quebec, but one figure in the August 11 road test needs to be corrected.

Écolo Auto attributes 14,421 Quebec sales to 2025.

Available sales compilations instead place that figure in 2024, while approximately 6,791 Equinox EVs were sold in Quebec in 2025.

CAA-Quebec had also previously cited the 14,421-unit total for 2024 in its own coverage.

The correction does not erase the vehicle’s strong market position.

With 6,791 sales in Quebec during 2025, the Equinox EV still finished ahead of the Ford Mustang Mach-E at 4,452 units, the Hyundai Kona EV at 3,351, and the Tesla Model Y at 2,277, according to the same sales compilation.

The more accurate conclusion is therefore nuanced: Equinox EV sales dropped substantially in 2025 compared with an exceptional 2024, but the model still remained Quebec’s best-selling electric SUV according to that dataset.

Recalls buyers should know about

The 2026 model has already been affected by several recall campaigns in Canada.

Transport Canada lists, among other issues, a software problem that may affect the pedestrian warning sound system on certain 2025 and 2026 Equinox EVs. Eligible vehicles can receive a software update as a remedy.

Another recall covers some 2026 vehicles that may have been delivered without an owner’s manual, while a separate campaign applies to certain vehicles equipped with 21-inch Continental CrossContact RX tires that may have a manufacturing defect.

The latter does not apply to every Equinox EV.

Anyone buying a new or used example should therefore check the vehicle identification number with Chevrolet or through Transport Canada’s recall database.

Who should consider a 2026 Equinox EV LT?

The Equinox EV LT appears particularly well suited to buyers looking for a first family electric vehicle, ideally with access to home charging, and who want to maximize driving range without moving into a luxury price bracket.

Its combination of price, equipment and range is its main advantage.

By contrast, drivers who frequently travel long distances in winter and rely heavily on public DC fast chargers should carefully compare its cold-weather performance and charging times with those of competing models.

What to watch next

The next several months will be important for the Equinox EV in Quebec.

Chevrolet’s promotional programs can change quickly, while the provincial Roulez vert program is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026.

The maximum federal EV Affordability Program incentive is also scheduled to decrease from $5,000 in 2026 to $4,000 in 2027.

For an eligible buyer, the financial environment in 2026 is therefore more favourable than what is currently planned for 2027.

That does not make the Equinox EV the best electric SUV for every buyer. It does, however, strengthen an already compelling proposition: substantial range and family-friendly space at a relatively accessible price, with slower fast charging remaining its most obvious compromise
