The Lamborghini Temerario GT3 has secured its first IMSA pole position after Andrea Caldarelli put the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports car at the front of the GTD Pro field at Virginia International Raceway. The Italian driver set a 1:44.773 lap in qualifying on Saturday, giving the new Lamborghini its first top starting position in the championship. The result also puts the Temerario GT3 in a strong position ahead of Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIR.

Caldarelli’s lap was enough to beat the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R, which qualified with a 1:44.924. The gap between the two cars was only 0.151 seconds, underlining how close the GTD Pro field is at VIR. Lamborghini will therefore have little room for error when the race gets underway.

Lamborghini gets another breakthrough with the Temerario GT3

The pole comes only a few weeks after the Temerario GT3 scored its first IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship victory at Road America. That result gave Lamborghini an early breakthrough with its new GT3 racer, and the qualifying performance at VIR adds another important achievement. The No. 9 car is driven by Andrea Caldarelli and Sandy Mitchell.

The competition will be particularly strong, with Lamborghini facing cars such as the BMW M4 GT3 EVO, Porsche 911 GT3 R, Ford Mustang GT3 and McLaren 720S GT3 EVO. The small qualifying gaps mean the starting position could prove valuable, but it will not guarantee anything once the race begins. Tyre management, pit stops and traffic are likely to play an important role over the full distance.

For Lamborghini, the result also confirms that the Temerario GT3 is already capable of fighting at the front. The car has moved quickly from a new entry in the IMSA field to a race winner and now a pole sitter. That progress makes Sunday’s race an important test of how competitive the new Lamborghini can be over a longer distance.

A tight GTD Pro field leaves little room for mistakes

The GTD Pro class is known for close competition, and qualifying at VIR once again demonstrated that narrow margins can separate the leading manufacturers. The Corvette finished just 0.151 seconds behind the Lamborghini, while the other leading GT3 cars will start within striking distance. A strong opening stint could therefore be crucial for Pfaff Motorsports.

The race will also require a different approach from qualifying. Caldarelli’s single fast lap was enough to secure pole, but the team now needs to manage fuel, tyres, traffic and pit strategy for the entire event. Any mistake could quickly erase the advantage created by Saturday’s qualifying performance.

That makes the start particularly interesting for Lamborghini. The Temerario GT3 has already demonstrated the speed needed to beat its rivals over one lap, but endurance-style racing places much greater demands on the car and the team. Sunday will provide a clearer indication of whether Lamborghini has the consistency to remain at the front.

Can the Temerario GT3 turn pole into another victory?

The Michelin GT Challenge at VIR takes place today, Sunday, August 23, with the WeatherTech Championship race scheduled for around 2 hours and 40 minutes. Lamborghini will start from the front of the GTD Pro field, giving Pfaff Motorsports the opportunity to control the opening stages. The challenge will be maintaining that position as the race develops.

The Corvette and the other GT3 manufacturers will have plenty of opportunities to fight back during the race. Traffic, tyre wear, pit stops and changing track conditions can all alter the order at VIR, making the final result difficult to predict from qualifying alone. For Lamborghini, avoiding mistakes may be just as important as having the fastest car.

The Temerario GT3 has already made an impressive start to its IMSA career. A first victory at Road America was followed by a first pole at VIR, giving Lamborghini two major results in a short period. If Pfaff Motorsports can convert today’s starting advantage into another win, the new GT3 racer will have made an even stronger case for itself among the leading cars in the championship.
