Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive — the layout that sends power to your wheels shapes how a car handles, how it copes with weather, and how much it costs to run. Here is how the three compare.
Front-wheel drive (FWD)
The most common layout on everyday cars. The engine drives the front wheels, which keeps the drivetrain compact, cheap and light. Benefits are better fuel economy, more interior space and solid traction in rain and light snow, because the engine\’s weight sits over the driven wheels. The trade-off is less balanced handling and a tendency to understeer when pushed hard.
Rear-wheel drive (RWD)

Power goes to the back wheels while the front wheels focus on steering. That split gives better weight balance, sharper handling and stronger towing and acceleration, which is why sports cars, trucks and many luxury sedans use it. The downside: RWD can struggle for grip on snow or ice unless paired with good tires and traction control.
All-wheel drive (AWD)
All four wheels receive power, either full-time or on demand. AWD offers the best all-weather traction and confident acceleration on slippery surfaces. The costs are real, though: more weight, slightly worse fuel economy, and higher purchase and repair prices. Note that AWD helps you accelerate in the snow — it does not help you brake or corner any better than good winter tires would.
Which should you choose?
- FWD for value, efficiency and everyday commuting in mild climates.
- RWD for driving enjoyment, performance or serious towing.
- AWD if you regularly face snow, ice, gravel or steep, wet roads.
The bottom line
There is no universally \”best\” drivetrain — only the best fit for your climate and priorities. And whatever you drive, a proper set of tires matters far more for winter safety than the drivetrain badge on the tailgate.
