What a turbocharger actually does

A turbo uses the engine\’s exhaust gases to spin a compressor that forces more air into the cylinders. More air means more fuel can be burned, so a small turbo engine can make the power of a much larger one — a 1.5-liter turbo four can match an old 2.5-liter.

The case for turbocharged engines

  • Strong low-end torque: turbos deliver punch early, making the car feel eager around town.
  • More power from less engine: smaller displacement can mean lower emissions ratings and, in gentle driving, better economy.
  • Better performance at altitude, where thin air saps naturally aspirated engines.
